The Best Butter Chicken in Melbourne

Have you ever eaten a dish so good that it was almost unforgettable? For many people in Melbourne, that dish is butter chicken. Butter chicken is a popular Indian dish that's hard to describe in words—you have to try it. After being marinated in spices and yoghurt, the chicken is grilled to perfection. The sauce is made up of tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic, butter, cream and more spices. It's served with rice and naan bread for dipping or scooping up some sauce. Butter chicken is a classic dish enjoyed in India for years. Like many other traditional Indian dishes, it has found its way onto menus across Melbourne as part of the city's richly diverse culinary scene.

History of Butter Chicken

Delhi, India's capital city, is believed to have been where butter chicken was first developed. During the 1950s, the restaurant known as Moti Mahal was owned and operated by a man named Kundan Gurjal.  Monish Gujral, the grandson of Kundan, said that his grandfather helped develop the Tandoori Chicken. This story also involves the establishment of the famous restaurant known as Moti Mahal. It was during a time when the health of Mokha Singh deteriorated that he sold the business to Gujral. Businessman KL Gujral knew that the Tandoori Chicken pieces would tend to dry out if they were unsold. He then devised a plan to make a basic sauce consisting of butter, cream, and tomatoes. This would help retain the moisture in the chicken pieces and make them more palatable. Thus, butter chicken has been created.  Since it was first invented, butter chicken has travelled the world. You can find it in Indian restaurants all around the globe.

How Butter Chicken is made

For several hours, chicken is marinated in various spices, including ginger, garlic, lemon juice, Kashmiri red chilli, salt, and garam masala. The chicken is then cooked in a traditional clay oven, which is grilled or oven-baked. It is served with a mild curry sauce, made with butter and contains ginger, garlic, and tomatoes. The sauce is usually made smooth by simmering the ingredients until it has absorbed most of the water and is sieved to prevent it from sticking to the surface. Curry leaves, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, and cinnamon leaves are some of the spices that can be used. Cashew paste can also be used as a thickener. Coriander is then added to the mixture to finish it off.
